Grip strength for golf improves clubhead speed, clubface control, and shot consistency by letting you hold the club with less effort.

The counterintuitive part is that stronger hands should grip the club more lightly, not harder. Most amateurs squeeze too tight because their grip is too weak to do anything else.

Before the training, one piece of housekeeping, because this phrase means two completely different things on a golf course.

Grip Strength vs Strong Grip (Two Different Things)

Search "grip strength for golf" and you'll get two kinds of answers, because golf uses the word "strength" in a way no other sport does.

  • Grip strength means how much force your hands and forearms can produce. Measured in kilograms or pounds on a dynamometer. This is a physical quality you train.
  • A strong grip in golf means hand position. Rotating your hands to the right on the club so you see more knuckles on your lead hand. A weak grip is rotated the other way. It has nothing to do with how strong your hands are, and everything to do with clubface angle at impact.

You can have a strong grip position with weak hands, or a weak grip position with a crushing grip.

Why Grip Strength Matters in the Golf Swing

Your hands are the last link in the kinetic chain. Force starts in the ground, travels through your legs, hips, torso, shoulders and arms, and every bit of it has to pass through your hands before it reaches the clubhead.

If your grip is the weakest part of that chain, energy leaks out right at the end.

Research published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine has linked stronger grip strength in golfers to higher clubhead speed and better shot accuracy, which follows logically from how force transfers through the swing.

Three things a stronger grip gives you:

  • Clubface control through impact. A stable clubface at the moment of contact is most of what determines where the ball goes.
  • Efficient energy transfer. Less force bleeding out between your arms and the club.
  • Control on off-center strikes. This is the one nobody mentions. A miss-hit creates torque that twists the club in your hands. Weak hands let it twist, and a bad shot becomes a worse one.

That last point leads somewhere interesting. Amateurs arguably need more grip strength than tour pros, because amateurs miss the center of the face far more often, and every one of those strikes has to be controlled.

The Death Grip Problem

Here's the insight that reframes grip training for golfers entirely.

Tour pros have significantly stronger hands than amateurs, and they hold the club lighter. That sounds contradictory until you look at it as a percentage.

Say holding the club securely through a swing requires around 50 pounds of force. A player with 100 pounds of grip strength is working at 50% of maximum. That feels easy. Relaxed forearms, free wrists, smooth tempo.

Now give that same 50-pound requirement to a player with 60 pounds of grip strength. They're at more than 80% of everything they have, on every single swing. Forearms tense up. Shoulders follow. The wrists stop hinging freely. That's the death grip, and it's almost always a strength problem being blamed on technique.

Every coach in the game tells amateurs to hold the club softer. Very few point out that you cannot hold something softly when it's taking most of your strength just to hold it at all.

Build the strength and the light grip stops being something you have to think about.

Which Type of Grip Strength Golf Actually Needs

Grip strength isn't one quality. It splits into distinct types, and golf leans on them unevenly.

Support grip

Your ability to maintain a hold over time under load. This is the primary one for golf. A swing is a sustained hold through a violent rotational movement, repeated across 70 to 90 shots plus a practice range session.

Crush grip

Raw squeezing power. Useful as a base, and it's what most grip training builds, but golf never asks you to crush anything.

Extension strength

The opposite of squeezing, opening the hand against resistance. Almost nobody trains it, and skipping it is how golfers end up with elbow pain.

Pinch grip

Thumb and finger strength. Minor role in golf, but it contributes to hand stability.

How Strong Should a Golfer's Grip Be

There's no official benchmark, but there's useful reference data.

Golf performance clinics report the average golfer walking in for an assessment tests around 30kg. General population norms sit around 46 to 56kg for men in their twenties and thirties, dropping to roughly 31 to 42kg by their sixties. For women the ranges run about 28 to 36kg and 20 to 28kg across the same spans.

If you're a male golfer sitting near 30kg, you're below average for the general population before you even consider athletic demand. That's a lot of amateur golfers.

Grip Strength Exercises for Golfers

Six movements, covering support, crush, rotation and extension. Fifteen minutes, twice a week.

1. Rotational Forearm Training

Grip Strength and Golfer's Elbow

Worth its own section, because grip training done badly causes the injury it's supposed to prevent.

Golfer's elbow is pain on the inside of the elbow where the wrist flexor tendons attach. It comes from repetitive gripping load with no counterbalancing work on the extensors. Train only the squeezing muscles and you build exactly the imbalance that produces it.

Two rules keep you clear:

Grip Strength for Golfers Over 50

Grip strength peaks in your early thirties and declines noticeably after 50, which is when most golfers start losing distance and blaming everything except their hands.

The decline isn't inevitable. Resistance training maintains and rebuilds grip strength well into your seventies and eighties.
